“It’s been awhile! Since I’ve said I’m sorry, since I’ve held my head up high!”

Yeah, ok. Thanks, Staind, for interjecting there.

Anyway, your Fairy God-Librarian here and this is the first post since moving to San Jose, Costa Rica.

I finally did it. It took several months, but I finally pulled the trigger and moved to beautiful Costa Rica. Well, San Jose can use a touch-up, but overall it’s a breath-taking country. Two months under the belt, baby! I’ve got a steady job teaching English and have tried to practice my Spanish with the locals whenever I can. My job offers free Spanish and dance classes, but everything will probably need a tune-up at one of the local universities soon.

I haven’t done any writing for fun while here; I’m reserving all of my writing energy for lesson plans. Definitely not my favorite part of the job. I’d gladly teach whatever my bosses want me to teach as long as I don’t have to write the lesson plans myself. Not gonna even lie.

But I do have to say, these are some laid-back yet hard-working people. You see a lot of poverty in the city but overall, so many people are working two jobs, taking care of family, learning other languages, going to school, and whatever else just to get by. And by doing so via bus, bike, taxi, or walking if they don’t own their own car. Farmers sell their fruits and veggies on the same corner everyday, rain or shine. Or at the local feria every Saturday. Vendors try to make a few extra colones through the streets. (As an American, where jaywalking is a thing and illegal, the fact that it is super chill here to just walk across a six-lane street, devil may care, is a scary feeling.)

No one lied to you when they told you that it takes time to adjust to a new location. However, I’ve learned to see everyday as a new learning experience. No matter how small, I learn something here that I would never have done if I had stayed home. The learning process itself is slow, frustratingly so, but I have the time. I don’t want to waste it. I strongly desire putting myself in different situations where I can learn something new and essential. The new friends I’ve made along the way help, but a lot of how I experience this new situation has been solo.

My new mantra: Banish the loneliness and fear, grit your teeth, and take the plunge. Whatever negative thing happens, you can handle it. More likely than not, you’ll learn something new and be a better person for it. Don’t waste your life doing what society wants you to do. You’ll never live if you follow that path! Life’s an adventure and we should all be explorers!

I’ll keep you posted.

Love,

Lacie 🙂
